Hey y’all—it’s Debora here, and I just had to share something truly magical from our recent boating trip at Hidden Cove Marina in Moncks Corner, SC. I’ve always loved coming out here for the peaceful views, friendly folks, and top-notch marina shop, but this time… we got an unforgettable surprise.

We saw manatees! Yes—real, live, gentle giants right in Lake Moultrie.

We were cruising along in one of the pontoon rentals (which are super easy to book at the marina, by the way), enjoying the calm morning water, when we noticed large, slow-moving shapes just beneath the surface. At first, we thought it might be a school of fish or even turtles, but as we drifted a little closer—there they were. Manatees. Peaceful, slow, and absolutely beautiful.

Where Can You See Manatees in South Carolina?

Turns out, Lake Moultrie and the surrounding lowcountry waterways can occasionally be home to manatees, especially during the warmer months. These gentle creatures migrate from Florida and sometimes make their way into the freshwater rivers, inlets, and lakes of coastal South Carolina, including the Cooper River and Lake Marion. Hidden Cove Marina is perfectly tucked into one of these natural corridors, making it a surprise hotspot for wildlife sightings.

What to Do If You Spot a Manatee

If you’re lucky enough to see one (or a few!) during your visit, here are a few tips we learned:

• Keep your distance. Manatees are protected by law and should never be approached or fed.

• Slow down your boat. If you're in a rental or your own vessel, throttle back and give them space.

• Take it all in. Snap a photo if you can (we did!) but mostly—just enjoy the peaceful moment.
