Mepkin Abbey sits quietly along the banks of the Cooper River in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. About an hour north of Charleston, this Roman Catholic monastery blends Lowcountry natural beauty with centuries of history. Established in 1949 by Trappist monks of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance, the Abbey occupies the former site of historic Mepkin Plantation.
Before becoming a monastery, the land belonged to Revolutionary War statesman Henry Laurens and later to publishing magnates Henry R. Luce and Clare Boothe Luce. In 1949, the Luces donated much of the property to the monks, who transformed it into a place of prayer, work, and hospitality. Today, Mepkin Abbey offers visitors a rare combination of spiritual calm and historic depth.
Monastic Life at Mepkin
The monks live according to the Rule of St. Benedict, balancing “ora et labora”—prayer and work. Their days revolve around communal prayer services and quiet manual labor. While once known for egg production, the Abbey is now widely recognized for cultivating gourmet mushrooms, along with other handcrafted goods sold in the on-site gift shop.
Simplicity and silence define the atmosphere. Though the monks live within a private cloistered area, they warmly welcome visitors to experience the grounds and spiritual rhythm of the Abbey.

The Abbey is located at 1098 Mepkin Abbey Road in Moncks Corner. Visitors can arrive by car via a scenic drive through moss-draped oaks and rural Lowcountry roads. For boaters, the Abbey is accessible from the Cooper River, making it a unique stop for those traveling downriver from Hidden Cove Marina.

The Abbey’s botanical gardens are the centerpiece of any visit. Towering live oaks, seasonal blooms, river overlooks, and a contemplative labyrinth invite slow exploration. Sculptures and religious artwork are scattered throughout, enhancing the reflective atmosphere.
Abbey Church
Simple and filled with natural light, the Abbey Church reflects traditional Cistercian design. Access is available by guided tour or during public services.
Historic Cemeteries
The grounds include burial sites for Henry Laurens and members of the Luce family, connecting the Abbey to both Revolutionary and modern American history.
Retreat Opportunities
For those seeking a deeper experience, Mepkin offers private, self-directed retreats at the St. Francis Retreat Center. Guests stay in simple rooms, share quiet meals, and are welcome to attend monastic prayer services. Retreats are donation-based and must be reserved in advance.
